Frances, a portrait of a lady in the morning

2009, Oil on Canvas, 50x40cm, Private collection, New York

"I like the impasto and rapid execution, which is why the image is captivating. There are some adjustments, but that's OK - they don't detract from the immediacy of the application of paint. You "felt" this image and that shows. The use of subdued but positive colour is very skillful. The image is compelling and you want to know more about the sitter. This picture would be a joy to live with." - William J Swann, artist

Oma, the artist's grandmother

2007, Oil on Canvas, 50x40cm, The artist's collection

Painted almost entirely from memory, this portrait was completed in 2007, alsmost two years after Paola's grandmother had passed away.

"Back then I still had her features clearly inprinted in my mind", says the artist. "Of course, one never quite forgets somebody's presence, smell, touch... but I was starting to feel the image of her slowly fading and I wanted to capture the memory."
